Sometimes i run across some interesting articles that i want to try out; there were a couple this month. First, the folks at Car Talk offered up a new way to look in your mirrors. Second, the Today Show looks at old-school shaving.
I’m not sure why the shaving article caught my eye, but while reading it i had one of those lightbulb moments: its costing me some rediculous amount of money to buy cartridges for my razor (original Gillette Mach 3), even at the local warehouse club. Old-fashioned double-edge razor blades cost practically nothing in comparision. So the question was, can i get the same (or better) shave with an ole’ time safety razor at a fraction of the cost? I only needed two things to perform the analysis and testing procedure: razor and blades. Blades: check. Razor: ???
Finding a safety razor turned out to be the real problem to solve. I looked around various places as my travels allowed, but to no avail. Searching the web led to many, costly, options. Enter the old standby, eBay. After a few searches i was able to find this razor for only $7; new-in-box.
The end result: no more costly Mach 3 blades for me. The only negative result is that it takes me a minute or two longer to shave than before; which will likely improve with practice.
Speaking of mirrors (you need a mirror to shave your face), the Car Talk article piqued my engineering minds interest. What was missing from the article was a graphic depicting the blind spots before changing the mirrors positions. I made the changes as described, and so far i’m pretty pleased. The only downside i’ve seen (or not seen) is that backing-up to park is a little more difficult as i formerly relied on the door mirrors to see how far my rear tires were from the lines on each side.
The end result: jury is still out on the new mirror positions; but i’m going to leave them until i need to move them, or else i hit something. :-)
