A new service rolled-out their public beta yesterday, 30 Boxes. They have done a excellent job with the user interface and some nice export options. They’re still missing a few features that are very useful (ie. specifying a repeat event on weekdays). But i must admit, the intrigueing missing link (pun intended) was ‘Import’.
You create a new service that you want folks to use but don’t offer an import option? eh? I find this a little confusing. Are they trying to market this service to folks that don’t have calendaring? Was it a tactical decision to prevent system abuse and overload during the initial roll-out? Was it just overlooked? Curious indeed.
I do appreciate anyone who is willing to tackle calendaring. The reason why there are so few good calendaring apps is that it is not easy. 30 Boxes seems to have good potential at this point, i’ll be watching for the follow-thru. They pass the i-might-use-the-service smell test; they let you export your data in a common (icalendar) format. If the service doesn’t last and as long as you backup your data, you’ll be safe from a dot-bomb explosion.
Here’s to hoping the 83 degrees team follows-thru…
