Well, TiVo finally gave me an upgrade option! TiVo To Offer Lifetime Subscription Transfer. Yah!
I had previously given up on having a TiVo when my current unit finally lets the smoke out. Now i don't have to wait for that time to come; my new Series 2 DT TiVo is on its way.
My original TiVo Series 1, a Phillips HDR112 with an upgraded drive, has probably lasted longer than it should have. I can't remember when i upgraded the drive ('03-'04?), but i received the unit in October of 2000 after winning one thru one of the TiVo giveaways. I was promptly hooked and bought a lifetime subscription for the unit (then $199). There were some times of late when i thought it was going to go up in smoke, but it is still humming along.
Having the TiVo for 7 years brings the cost of ownership to a measly $3 a month, counting the HD upgrade even. A far cry better than the $8/month Time Warner Cable wants for a DVR that is not as easy to use a the TiVo.
