Some Thoughts on Why People Consider Leaving Their Job

Mitch Owen asked:

The last time something happened that made you think your current job is not the one you want to be in... what was it that made you think about leaving that job?

I gave this some thought and decided to write-up a response. Since i respect my current boss, i decided to run it by him before posting it and gave him the leeway to edit out (redact) portions he thought would not be beneficial to the reader (or could be construed as embarrassing to my past, current or future employers).

Needless to say, this had nothing to do with not being appreciated, not being included, nor control over work. At least not directly.

Guilty Pleasures

I stopped paying any attention to the news media. Whether in print, on the tube or on the net, i just don't pay any attention to it (not to be confused with apathy). I haven't for sometime now. It is funny that this catches so many folks off guard...

"You didn't hear about that?"
Nope.
"Really?"
Nope.
"Sure you did!?!?"
Er, nope.

Related: stop being bad, media snacking

However, i do consume large quantities of information; just not from "breaking news" outlets trying to get my attention to justify their advertising rates.

Similarly, i stopped paying any attention to politics. All politics. As much as i love the United States of America, our political system is broken. Terribly broken. We're a year away from electing our next president and we have 30 people spending millions each in an attempt to rule the nation.

For giggles, some counts by Facebook group:

John McCain: 1,600
Rudy Giuliani: 2,000
Ron Paul: 43,000
Barack Obama: 400,000
Stephen Colbert: 1,500,000

That is the sad state of politics in this country. I think i would vote for Colbert too...

Less depressing, i installed AdBlock Plus for Firefox. Nice, very nice.

While i feel some guilt over these things, i realize my life is better for it. I'm sure there is some research out there that says i will live longer now. :)

The bottom line is that no organization can grow and prosper until the leaders are willing to step up and take responsibility. As that begins to happen, it opens up a whole world of possibility. -- Michael S. Hyatt
